Final Fantasy VII, Tomb Raider, John Madden Football, and Spacewar! have now been inducted into The Strong’s World Video Game Hall of Fame.
So, what exactly is The Strong? As defined by its website, it’s a collections-based museum devoted to the history and exploration of play. It’s also one of the largest history museums the U.S. has to offer and is home to the International Center for History of Electronic Games, the World Video Game Hall of Fame, and much more.
Each year, the institute offers an opportunity to the general public to have a say in which games should be nominated. From there, an internal committee selects a group of finalists. Afterward, an international group of journalists, scholars, and others are allowed to advise on which games should actually receive the honor.
The main criteria for a game to be considered include:
- Icon status
- Wide recognition
- Longevity
- Influence
- Geographical reach
