Nintendo announced Thursday that over 4.8 million units of its new Switch console have been sold in the U.S. since its release last March. This sets a new record for the most units sold of a home gaming console within the first 10 months of its U.S. launch.
Unsurprisingly, the release of huge franchise titles such as the Legend of Zelda: BOTW, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (along with the recent holiday season), persuaded many that the Switch was a must-have console.
And, Nintendo has some statistics to prove just that.
Out of all U.S. Switch owners:
– 60% own a copy of Super Mario Odyssey
– 55% have bought BOTW
– 50% are in possession of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
– 20% have a copy of Splatoon 2
The other side of Nintendo’s phenomenal success has been their willingness to tap into the ever-growing indie business. Releasing a total of 300 titles so far including fun couch co-op games like Overcooked, stimulating simulations such as Stardew Valley, and the unique RPG Sports game; Golf Story, the Switch has accomplished reaching a hugely diverse set of clientele in just a few months.
For those worried that Nintendo can’t possibly top the success of 2017, the company assures that there’s still much more to come.
This year, Nintendo Switch owners can look forward to Nintendo-published games like Kirby Star Allies, Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, and a new game starring Yoshi. Fans can also expect continued support from major publishers such as EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Capcom, SEGA, Take 2, and Bethesda, plus a growing catalog of quality content from indie developers.”
Nothing more was said by Nintendo in regards to specific, new titles. However, Wario64 pointed out a few days ago that several placeholders for new, untitled Switch games have appeared on Amazon. This along with rumors that a new Nintendo Direct could happen on January 11th could mean some new games could be announced very soon.
This is all terrific news from Nintendo regarding the Switch. The system has certainly had an exciting start. Here’s hoping Nintendo can keep the momentum going in 2018!
