If you live in or near the Wilkes County, NC area or are just traveling through sometime and want to join in with us on a raid, feel free to do so. Here are the instructions on how to become a part of our local group.
Download Discord:
-Download the Discord app on your phone or tablet (wherever you play Pokémon Go) from the Google Play or Apple store
-Sign up for a discord account, preferably using your PGo username or something similar so people in the group will know it is you when you communicate on discord
-Let me know when complete, via text (###-####)
Text Invite:
-I will text you an invite for the Wilkes group
-Click on the link in the text and it will allow you to join the WNCPGO group in Wilkes
Discord App:
-Under the WNC PGO header, look for the # tag_requests sub-heading, click on it
-At the bottom, beside the +, type in .iam wilkesboro
-It will confirm you have joined the wilkesboro group
-Next, beside the +, type in .iam valor, .iam mystic, OR .iam instinct based on your team name
-The “bot” under this subheading also gives you these as options if you get lost, you can scroll up the feed to find them.
Using the App:
-You are now fully set up and ready to use the Discord app
-The main 2 channels/sub-headings the local group uses are under the heading WILKESBORO and sub-headings “wilkesboro_general” and “wilkesboro_raid”
-Each channel is a live feed with the username of who posted, when they last posted, and what their message was
-The “wilkesboro_general” channel is used to discuss anything wilkes p-go related, post pictures of pokemon, ask questions about how the game works, or post your findings and let others know what you found and where in case they are in the neighborhood.
-The “wilkesboro_raid” channel is used specifically for communicating about raids, when they start, who is coming, etc. If you find a raid and want to ask others to join, post a screenshot of the egg. If you want to join a raid, make sure you post that you are coming and what time you will be there. You will have to learn where the gyms are, and approximate driving times, but you will over time. You can always ask if in doubt!
Discord Alerts:
-Each channel allows you to turn on/off alerts so you choose how often you are alerted (game controller icon will appear in your messages bar & an alert will sound)
-Getting an alert on every post is overkill, especially if you are working, with family, or not raiding. I suggest turning this off.
-When you are in a channel, click on the options button (or 3 dots), on the top right corner of your screen
-Choose Channel Settings
-Choosing “Mute #[channel name]” will turn off all messages from that channel
-I usually leave the channel on and choose “Only @mentions” unless you are out playing and want every posting to alert you.
-You can toggle on or off at any time
Direct Message/Callouts:
-You can alert someone specifically in the game by typing “@” and their username
-Discord will give you a list of users in the Wilkes group and will narrow that list down as you begin to type letters in their username after the “@” symbol
-This is still visible to all players watching the feed
-I am @Leebot40; our other area group leaders are @DoctorStrange, and @JVPBlackhawks
-You can also use @wilkesboro when you want everyone to get the alert, but use it sparingly and only when it is applicable
-@everyone pings the entire WNC PGO group which includes Boone, Wilkes, Hickory, Taylorsville, Lenoir, Morganton, etc. You should not have occasion to use this.
-You can also direct message someone in the group by holding down their username and choosing direct message (method may differ slightly on i-phone). This is a private message and is not seen by the group.
Discord guidelines:
This is a public forum and should be treated as such. Please be kind and respectful of other players. Keep bad language to a minimum. This app is used mainly to coordinate with others, share expertise and advice, learn about the game, joke, and share your findings with the group. It is ok to rant about the game, changes to the game, updates, Niantic, etc. However, if you have a concern about someone else in the group, please take it up with that person directly or reach out to our admin @Bull if you feel someone is abusing it. We want it to remain a friendly and helpful place to communicate.
Raid times/days general :
-Most afternoons between 3:30 and 6:30 (we usually fade off some on Thursday and Friday)
-We have noticed that Niantic usually ramps down the raids on Wednesday evenings for some reason, we assume it may be because so many gyms are at churches.
-If someone is off from work, they may post throughout the day to ask for help
-Saturday’s and Sundays mid-day until, especially if there is a raid boss people are trying to catch
-Join when you can
-Again, be sure to post raids you find, what time you want to start the raid, and let others know you are coming. No need to post anything level 2 or below as most players with mid to strong accounts can solo them.
