What started as a quietly announced livestream over the weekend, turned into a lively hour-long celebration of all things Mega Man on Monday. The Capcom event, hosted by developers and well-known media personalities, was a fantastic mix of memories from the Blue Bomber’s past and unveilings for his future.
The biggest news of the hour was the announcement of Mega Man 11, which will release in late 2018 on PC, Switch, PS4, and XB1. Revealed in a brief (but impressive) trailer, this upcoming platforming adventure will be a new type of 2D (called 2.5D) side scroller set in a gorgeously fun 3D world.
To go along with the new environment, is a sleek, modern look for the Blue Bomber which art director, Yuji Ishihara, describes as a balance of “cute and cool.”
Another alteration to Mega Man has to do with his appearance whenever he switches weapons. Instead of just a simple color change, his whole exterior will now be transformed.
The game’s enemies are being modified as well. Subtle additions have been made to their abilities, causing them to be even more challenging to players.
Besides the BIG announcement, Capcom revealed 2 more Mega Man releases are on the way.
- Mega Man Legacy Collections 1&2 (Mega Man 1-10) for Switch with TBA Amiibo support, Spring 2018
- Mega Man X collection (games 1-8) for PC, Switch, PS4, & XB1, Summer 2018
Not wanting to be left out of the 30th anniversary celebratory action, Game Informer used the last bit of the stream to reveal the fantastic cover for their December Mega Man issue.
Overall, it was an exciting hour for fans of the Mega Man series. It was also a nice glimpse into the psyche of the Capcom developers. It’s obvious that they take their job very seriously and are working hard to produce a fan worthy game that’s both reminiscent of the past and, at the same time, offers something new.
