If you’re a fan of Pokémon Go or Harry Potter or both, then you might be interested in Niantic’s latest announcement of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite! It’s an augmented reality game for the mobile phone that, like Pokémon Go, mixes the real world with an imaginary one.
Niantic will be partnering with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and the WB Games San Francisco’s development team to create this new experience, inspired by the J.K. Rowling series.
According to Niantic’s blog,
Players will learn spells, explore their real-world neighborhoods and cities to discover and fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will leverage the full stack of the Niantic Platform while also providing an opportunity to pioneer all new technology and gameplay mechanics.”
It’s an intriguing concept and one that has a chance to do well considering the popularity of Harry Potter, as long as the game can live up to fan expectations (which will be high). Hopefully the WB development team will help Niantic design an experience which will be authentic to the series.
Release date and other details have not yet been revealed. We’ll post updates as we learn more.
