As collectors and former retail owners, our mission on any trip is to seek out and find cool, locally owned video game stores to shop. Not only do we love to support these (sometimes) hidden gems, but enjoy studying how the owner of each has found ways to standout from the competition.
During our trip through Lexington, SC last week, we found one such store, called Old School Player Video Games, where owner, David Hallman, doesn’t just take pride in his business, but excels at it more than almost anyone we’ve ever met. And, you know it too, the moment you step inside his space.
First of all, the smell is fresh, which is quite a difficult task to achieve when you deal in games and consoles that have been around (in basements, attics, etc.) for quite some time. The second thing you’ll notice is how well organized each and every square inch of the store is down to the corners which, in some cases, are filled with humorous, fake rats.
Lastly, you’ll feel you’re somewhere special when greeted kindly by David who gives a quick rundown of what you can expect to see then lets you have as much time as needed to look around.
Of course, when you do look around you’ll find a nice selection of games (& music, movies) that are fairly priced. While browsing, you’ll also notice Mr. Hallman hard at work cleaning, testing, pricing, organizing, and planning for what is most definitely his pride and joy.
